Spanning en sensatie
Wie van spanning en avontuur houdt, komt in Costa Rica volop aan zijn trekken. Maar soms kan het ook te spannend zijn. Dat overkomt schrijfster en reisleidster Femke de Groot wanneer ze met een groep de top van de vulkaan Rincón de la Vieja beklimt. Wanneer ze boven de boomgrens komt en het plotseling hard begint te waaien en te regenen, zit er niks anders op dan om te keren. Desondanks wordt het een onvergetelijke tocht. Schrijver, fotograaf en bergklimmer Ronald Naar heeft een vergelijkbare ervaring met wildwater raften in de Pacuare. Vanwege de hoge waterstand is het te gevaarlijk en moet de sensationele tocht afgebroken worden. Als alternatief gaat hij zeekajakken in de Stille Oceaan en dat blijkt een openbaring.
Stad en platteland
Behalve veel natuurschoon heeft Costa Rica ook culturele hoogtepunten. Journaliste Selma Kers bezoekt in de hoofdstad San José en omgeving enkele fraaie musea, theaters en historische gebouwen. Reisorganisator Wouter Zagt kent de stad inmiddels wat langer, want hij woont er met zijn Costaricaanse vrouw en zoon. Hij beschrijft hoe het is om deel uit te maken van een Tica-familie. Benieuwd naar het plattelandsleven, verblijft Ellen Weber een weekje als vrijwilliger op de ecofinca van een bioboer. Indianen en Nederlanders
In buurland Panama vaart Gerard van Heusden met een containerschip door het Panamakanaal terwijl Ellen Weber in een uitgeholde boomstam naar de San Blas Archipel gaat. Daar maakt ze kennis met de Kuna-indianen en hun molas. Op Bastimentos slaapt Ellen tussen de cacaobomen en ondersteunt daarmee een aantal Ngöbe-families. Met het toeristengeld kunnen deze indianen hun kinderen naar school laten gaan. Op zoek naar de lekkerste koffie, bezoekt ze in Boquete een koffieplantage van een Nederlands echtpaar.
